Build Write

My first freelance gig and first project in the Squarespace platform. Miriam Sweet Goldstein’s brochure website was rewarding in many ways.

My first-ever freelance gig came when I didn’t really expect it. I was six months out of a full-time job and just weeks earlier I completed a front-end web development course at HackerYou (now Juno).

The job hunt was first priority and top of mind when a friend from my hometown asked if I’d take on a website build. The pitch was a heartwarming one. Not only did it come from a very cool person from my past, but it gave me the opportunity to help someone who made a real difference in people’s lives.

Miriam Sweet Goldstein is a registered nurse and registered psychotherapist. In trying to spend more time with her family, Mariam left full-time work and began a consulting business focused on women with a breast cancer diagnosis. She helped her clients navigate the often complex and exhausting healthcare system throughout treatment.

HOW I HELPED

Miriam needed a website to promote her service and connect with prospective clients. My friend Adrienne and freelance founder of January Content wrote the copy and Miriam herself provided the photography, all of which she shot herself. It was an honour to help with the build of Miriam’s brochure website.

It was my first experience with the Squarespace platform and it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the software. The goal for the website was to be simple and easy to navigate, with a clear and concise message; “If you have a breast cancer diagnosis and feel overwhelmed, Miriam is experienced and available to help.”

I quickly adapted to the site builder tools and it’s so nice to manage all content management, metrics, web hosting and domain in one interface with one credit card entry. This project guaranteed Squarespace as a viable option for any brochure website I build in the future.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

THE RESULTS

Building this website for Mariam provided me the inspiration and courage to make freelancing the next chapter in my digital career. Adrienne and Miriam both made career decisions with their families in mind, completing this project was all the encouragement I needed to do the same. I will always be grateful for this opportunity.

The website is now offline and Miriam is officially retired. Apparently the work was almost as consuming as her full-time positions, which defeated the original point of Miriam’s endeavour. I hope this means the site brought her a good amount of business. Adrienne assures me it did.
