I didn’t grow up with video games or many toys. As a kid, a ball was all I ever needed. Sports were an all-encompassing obsession and competition was constantly on my mind. Not much has changed.
As a player, coach, official, convener, trainer and super fan, I’ve run the full gamut when it comes to the wild world of sports. Now, in this insane information age, we can follow our favourite leagues, teams and athletes with unprecedented access and I take full advantage.
Basketball and soccer are my faves, but I can watch and enjoy any sport at any level. There is nothing that gets me more fired up than my son’s competitive journey and the Bell City Raps and Reds Facebook groups keep me in touch with my two favourite teams and many of my best friends. I feel incredibly fortunate to have a son who is as excited about sports as I am. For most of my life, I would have bet that if I had an athletic child, that kid would focus on basketball. Max does enjoy playing ball at Eurostep, and he’s pretty good at it, but football is life for him.
From Little Kickers to SC Toronto house league, Sporting CF to FC Toronto, plus a lot of private training sessions and renegade soccer games in-between, Max is laser-focused on a long career in football. I’m doing my best to document as many of his steps as I can along the way.

As a middle-aged jock, I'm able to say I was a Day #1 Raptors fan. Basketball and its culture have been an integral part of my entire life and a topic me and my friends from Brantford can go on about forever.
Soccer was always a sport I tuned into when the major tournaments were on, but when I moved to Toronto and TFC moved into my neighbourhood, I quickly became hooked on the beautiful game. Now, I talk footy with my homeboys as much as I do ball. We’d love for you to join in on the Bell City Banter.
